The recovery from last year’s June flash floods is now at an important crossroads. One year in and the work that has been accomplished is remarkable: An estimated 1,000 homes that had substantial damage have been fully repaired. Residents of the region are on track to accept about $16 million of federal and state disaster loans. Private, nonprofit and foundation groups have committed more than $2 million to the recovery.
We knew we had it in us. We had been demonstrating the quality we would need for generations, for decades, every time a Nor’easter blew in, buried us and showed us its awesome power. We’d wiggle out each time, helping an elderly neighbor who couldn’t shovel or snowblowing for a family down the block who didn’t have the equipment. Neighbors helping neighbors. It’s just who we are. It’s what we do. Always.
