Now popular on the slopes, ski helmets have their limits
Thirteen-year-old Inger Eckman, the youngest of Philip and Julie Eckmans’ three children, died in 1986 in a skiing accident. Helmets were seldom worn in those days, and there's no way to know whether one would have saved her life.

Gun owners don’t accept a ‘compromise’
New gun laws being proposed in Minnesota this year could create opportunities for the state to confiscate firearms from law-abiding people, criminalize the failure to report stolen property, prohibit nonresidents from carrying concealed weapons even if they have passed background checks and have undergone training, enhance the power of sheriffs to arbitrarily deny concealed-carry permits, prohibit the purchase of some of the most popular firearms in the state, prohibit private sales of firearms to otherwise-lawful buyers, and create a system for firearm registration in Minnesota.

Reader's view: Enhanced gun regulations won’t lead to confiscation
After recent shooting tragedies, the issue of enhanced gun regulations must be dealt with in a speedy fashion. However, some conservatives continue to label enhanced control measures as an effort to attack the Second Amendment to the Constitution. This straw-man propaganda technique (misstating an opponent’s position and then destroying it to support one’s own position) causes fear and confusion. Instead, the issue is public safety.

Reader’s view: Simonson’s gun-control plans ignore Constitution
Gun-control proposals introduced and supported by state Rep. Erik Simonson are a complete disgrace to the United States Constitution (“Simonson introduces gun bills,” Feb. 6). When will politicians realize they have taken an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution? The last time I looked, the Second Amendment was part of our country’s Constitution. Such measures are in direct violation of it.
