Our view: Duluth: Still open, but in need of assistance
A little confusion was understandable, given the frantic warnings, the declarations of disaster and the national media attention during Duluth’s record-setting, roads-destroying rain event Tuesday night and Wednesday. Local view: Land swap bill a bad deal for children, a good deal for mining companies
In his May 24 commentary in the News Tribune (Congressman’s View: “Preserve and protect BWCAW; return trust lands to students”), U.S. Rep. Chip Cravaack explained that about 86,000 acres of state-owned school trust lands are locked inside the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and cannot generate money for the state school trust fund. Our view: After Grand Marais shooting, a sensible step toward safety
There’s no way anyone, let alone a defendant just convicted of a crime, should be able to retrieve a gun from his car and then return to a courthouse and move freely about inside while shooting, as happened in December in Grand Marais.

Local view: Congress needs to pass multi-year funding plan for infrastructure
Those of us who live and work in the Twin Ports know the importance of a healthy infrastructure. Our roads, bridges, airports, railways and harbors are lifelines of commerce and industry and the backbone for our economic vitality. However, we have our challenges also, with an aging water- distribution system, crumbling parking ramps and a seemingly endless need for road closures due to maintenance on our major highways. As Americans head into the start of the summer travel season they get the chance to experience surface infrastructure problems first-hand.
