Statue of Duluth's Tuskegee Airman unveiled
Gomer, who stands 5 feet, 9 inches tall, said the statue matches his memory of himself as a 1940s fighter pilot who flew 68 missions as one of the black airmen who broke the color barrier and flew over Europe. The men were depicted in the movie “Red Tails,” which was released this year.

A life-sized bronze statue of Tuskegee Airman Joe Gomer of Duluth will be unveiled today during a ceremony at the Commemorative Air Force hangar, 4831 Airport Road. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. The Esko High School jazz band will begin playing swing music at 1:45 p.m. The program begins at 2:30 p.m. The statue will be permanently housed in the new terminal at the Duluth International Airport when the terminal is finished.

Reader's view: Gomer coverage was great, but he became a major
Kudos to the News Tribune for its coverage of the well-deserved honors accorded to Joe Gomer for his service as an Army Air Corps fighter pilot in World War II. His service with the Tuskegee Airmen unit was remarkably extensive and indeed heroic.
