PHILIP EDWARD SEMERAU

Philip Edward Semerau, 63, of Duluth, passed away on March 1, 2013, at home after a short battle with cancer.

He was born on March 25, 1949, in Cloquet, Minn., to Arnold and Myrtella (Lindberg) Semerau.

Phil grew up in Holyoke, Minn. He graduated from Wrenshall High School and the University of Minnesota, Duluth.

Phil worked for Elliott’s, Jeno’s and the Duluth Public Library, where he retired from in November of 2006.

He met his wife, Marcia at the library, where she also worked. They married on May 10, 1986.

Phil enjoyed UMD athletics, attending volleyball, football, women’s and men’s basketball games. He had season tickets to the Duluth Playhouse and a family membership to the Lake Superior Zoo. Phil loved to travel and made trips to Africa, China, a Danube Cruise, Jordan and Israel. He had a keen interest in the Civil War and was a Yankee’s fan. Phil was a handyman for many, had an incredible skill for woodworking and a great eye for photography.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Marcia K.; two stepsons, Joshua Wright of Duluth and Lorne (Kati) Wright of Oak Harbor, Wash.; granddaughter, Kayla of Washington; brother, Jerry (Marcia D.) of Duluth and sister, Mary Semerau of Duluth; many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

GATHERING OF FAMILY AND FRIENDS: 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. memorial service Saturday, March 9, in the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 45th Ave. East and Colorado St. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to the Duluth Library Foundation, the UMD Athletics, for scholarships, (1216 Ordean St., Duluth, MN 55812) or a charity of choice, in Phil’s name.
