Albert Peter Kokkonen, 93, of Cambridge, passed away on Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at Agrace HospiceCare.
Albert Peter Kokkonen, 93, of Cambridge, passed away on Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at Agrace HospiceCare.
He was born on Dec. 18, 1919, in Townsend, Mass., the son of Peter and Vivian Kokkonen.
In 1951, Albert was united in marriage to Norma Salo. He served 25 years in the U.S. Air Force. He was active during World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam. He also served two tours of duty in France. Albert retired from the military in 1965 and began working with Allis Chalmers. He later used his G.I. Bill to go back to school and receive his associate degree in Accounting. He moved to Cambridge in 1972 and began work with the UW Extension Ag Publications, where he retired in 1983.
Albert enjoyed volunteering for RSVP and preparing taxes for the elderly. Together, he and Norma traveled all over the United States and internationally, staying in elder hostels. Albert was proud of his Finnish Heritage and enjoyed Tuesday night dinners with his family.
. He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma in 2005; son, David in 2012; and brothers, John and Kal.
Albert is survived by his children, Linda (Tom) Erickson of Hoyt Lakes, Minn., John (Nancy) Kokkonen of Stoughton, Joy (Jeff) Nelson of Stoughton, Charles Kokkonen (Noreen Hazlett) of Edgerton, and Gerald and Donald Kokkonen of Cambridge; grandchildren, Heather (Powell) Kopp, Jeff (Jen) Erickson, Sean (Krista) Erickson, Korine (Jody) Gilderhus and Daniel Nelson; six great-grandchildren; brother, Richard Kokkonen; and sister, Linda (Wayne) Anderson.
CELEBRATION OF LIFE: 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, in Gunderson East Funeral Home, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, with Military honors being conducted at 4 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Cambridge Public Library, 200 Spring Street, Cambridge, WI 53523.
