Fred Carl "Fritz" Borchardt ied of a stroke Dec. 29, 2012 with family at his side.

He was born Nov. 7, 1918 at his home in Willow River. He lived on the family farm near Willow River until the last two years of his life when he moved to his daughter's home.

Fred graduated from Willow River High School. Fred was a dairy farmer. He served on the Pine County Soil and Water Conservation Board for many years. He received many awards for his farming and service. He and Phyllis were Grand Marshalls of Willow River Days several years ago. He was hard working, friendly, loving, kind and gentle.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Robert; sister Emily; nephew Robert; son-in-law, Kenneth Darsow; two grandchildren Kevin and Krista Darsow; and daughter-in-law, Veronica Borchardt and sister-in-law, Gene and nephew Robert.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years Phyllis; daughter Janet (Frank) Kliegle of Duluth; their sons, Keith (Andrea) Darsow, and children Ryan, Brady, and Lydia, Scott Kliegle, and Mark (Melissa) Kliegle, and their son Everett. His son Rick lives in Willow River, and his children are Matthew (Jessica), Aaron (Maggie) their daughter Madilyn Veronica, and Rachel. His son David lives in Willow River, and his children are Brandon, Sam (Marie), and Jessica. His son Ralph (Karla) lives in Duluth, and their children are Zachary (Rachel), Luke, Kyra, and Lisa. His son Carl lives in Duluth. Fred's brothers Art and Ernie (Evelyn), and sister Marion, sister-in-law Gloria and his brother-in-laws Alfred (Sue) Henderson and Howard Harris, and many nieces and nephews survive him.

His body was given to the Whole Body Anatomy Bequest Program at the U of Minnesota.

Open house will be held Saturday, Jan. 19, from 1-4 p.m. at the Kettle River Township Hall about three miles south of Willow River on Hwy 61.

No gifts or flowers please.
