PAUL H. BROMAN

Paul H. Broman, 84, passed away in his home in Marumori, Japan, Nov. 23, 2012, with his loving family present.

Paul was known for his strong focus on his Christian faith and for his passion to tell the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Paul was raised in Duluth, where he attended the Duluth Gospel Tabernacle and graduated from Central High School. After joining the Army near the close of World War II, he served with the U.S. Army during the initial occupation of Japan. He was deeply touched by the desperate post war plight of the Japanese people. After Army service he returned to Japan where he spent the next 62 years. He was joined by two brothers, David and Philip, and his father and mother, Clifford and Elsa, all Duluthians.

Paul and his wife, Setsuko, had 24 children, 14 adopted at infancy. All of the children are tri-lingual in Chinese, Japanese, and English. Most joined in business with Paul.

Although Paul lived in very simple surroundings, he was founder of GrapeCity, a multinational software company that now employs over 800 software engineers throughout Asia. He was also co-founder of Meysen Academy, a Christian children’s school with two campuses in Sendai Japan with an enrollment of over 3,000 students. He was an active leader in both corporations until health issues forced his retirement a few years ago. Paul’s favorite enterprise is a modern Chinese translation of the Bible. The project has been on-going for 14 years and with substantial progress is now led by Paul’s oldest son, Paul Yoshi Broman.

When Paul would come into a room, his enthusiasms and passions seemed to fill the room. He will be missed and will be the topic of many fond memories.

Paul is survived by his wife, Setsuko; 22 children; several grandchildren; brothers David (Vernus) and Philip, all of Japan and John (Chickie) of Clermont Fla.; and many relatives in the Duluth area.
