Arthur E. Smith, 95, of Minneapolis, passed away peacefully on Nov. 9, 2012.
Arthur E. Smith, 95, of Minneapolis, passed away peacefully on Nov. 9, 2012.
Arthur was born in Buffalo, N.Y., on Feb. 28, 1917.
He graduated from Kenmore Senior High School and continued on to receive a B.S. Degree in art education from Buffalo State Teachers College in 1939, and a Masters degree in Education from Cornell University in 1947, and a Doctorate in Education from Syracuse University in 1952.
Arthur was married to Ruth M. Linton on June 26, 1940; they were married 66 years.
Arthur served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946, in the Camouflage Battalion, Topographic Battalion, Counter Intelligence Corp School, serving in France 1945-1946.
Arthur and Ruth moved to Duluth, in 1949 where he joined the Art Department at the University of Minnesota, Duluth. Art was highly influential in the development of the Fine Arts and Humanities Departments, and Directed the Tweed Museum of Art at UMD, retiring in 1980. In his retirement, Art enjoyed painting watercolors, providing them to many organizations across the country.
Arthur is preceded in death by his wife Ruth Smith.
Arthur is survived by his children, son Linton Smith and daughter Leanne Hanson; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren; and many other family and friends.
The family of Arthur Smith wishes to thank North Memorial Hospice for their care and kindness.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: 3 p.m. Nov. 19, in First Congregational Church in Princeton, Minn. A reception with family and friends will follow the service.
