Barbara Karin (Peterson) Kehtel, 75, passed away from Progressive Supranuclear Palsy on Sept. 1, 2012, surrounded by her family.

Barbara was born on June 22, 1937, in Duluth, Minn., to Sheldon and Dorothy (Shalgren) Peterson. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Wayne Peterson.

Barbara graduated in 1955 from Duluth Central High School. On June 9, 1956, she married William (Bill) Kehtel, and immediately started a family.

Barb loved quilting and made beautiful quilts for the hallmark events in the lives of her family. She loved playing bridge and was thrilled when she was invited to join the Duluth Women’s Club. Her hobbies included playing cards on the computer, crossword puzzles, gardening and watching the birds at her many feeders. She enjoyed having coffee with friends, fishing off the dock at Bergen Lake with Bill and Sunday dinners with the family. Although she said she didn’t enjoy cooking, she was a fabulous cook and her gravy was bar none the best! Barb was an avid ice skater in her youth; her love of ice skating continued as she enjoyed watching countless ice skating competitions on TV. She was passionate about attending her grandchildren’s sporting events and most recently her granddaughter’s college soccer games.

Throughout her life, Barb was involved in many school and church activities. She held many positions in the PTA and at Peace United Church of Christ.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Bill; her children Linda (Michael) Lundberg of Duluth, Sandra (William) Moen of Maplewood, Minn, Brian (Evie) Kehtel of Duluth and Susan (Amy Galarowicz) Kehtel of Duluth; her grandchildren Erik (Kelly) Lundberg, Scott Lundberg, Richard and Robert Moen, Nicholas, Kelsey and Hayley Kehtel, and Katie Kehtel; and her great-grandson Jackson Wagner-Lundberg.

The family would like to thank the staff at Essentia Health for their kind and supportive care.

Memorials to Peace United Church of Christ are preferred.

SERVICE: Family and friends may gather Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. memorial service at Peace United Church of Christ, 1111 N. 11th Ave. E. Burial will be at Park Hill Cemetery. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, Duluth, 727-3555
