Dean Pappas, 75, of Duluth passed away on July 28 at the Solvay Hospice House.
Dean Pappas, 75, of Duluth passed away on July 28 at the Solvay Hospice House, surrounded by loving family, following a 6-month battle with small-cell lung cancer.
Dean was born on June 29, 1937 in Duluth to Christ and Macaria Pappas.
He attended Duluth Central High School and thereafter began his 50-plus year career in the car business. He worked in car sales for many area dealerships, including many years at Eggebrecht Chevrolet. He felt very lucky to have a job that he loved going to every day, and he had a wonderful following of customers over the years.
Dean had a zest for life and lived life to the fullest. He enjoyed reading, music, boating, traveling, skiing, golfing and watching the Vikings play, but his greatest passion was spending time with family and friends. He loved being a hockey dad and was chosen as "Super Fan" by his son's softball team.
Dean had a strong faith in the Lord and was a member of the Twelve Holy Apostles Greek Church (of which his father was one of the founders), but also attended Holy Rosary Church and Glen Avon Presbyterian Church. He was very proud of his Greek heritage and loved blaring his Greek music throughout the house. He was also a member of the Duluth Elks Lodge No. 133.
Dean is survived by his loving wife, Laurie (Johnson) Pappas, of nearly 33 years and their two children, Michael (Laura) Pappas of Duluth, and Molly (Timothy) Schmidt of Milwaukee, WI; as well as five children from his previous marriage, Dyke (Corinne) Pappas of Cloquet; Kelley (Frank) Soroka of Kelowna, BC; Christopher Pappas of Hawaii; Dean Pappas of Idaho; and Jayson Pappas of Kelowna, BC; seven grandchildren, Nick, Chris, Katie, Holly, Jamie, Dean, and also Heather Barber of Houston, TX, with whom he had a special bond, and five great-grandchildren. Dean is also survived by his younger brother, Chris (Valerie) Pappas of Simi Valley, CA; his sister-in-law, Kris Foss of Spokane, WA and her three children, Bryan, Kara and Loren--to whom Dean served as a surrogate father--and seven other nieces and nephews, Kerri, Rick, Gerard, Phillip, Amy, John and Nick.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Kathy.
Dean's family would like to thank the amazing staff at the Solvay House for the tender loving care they gave to Dean and his family during his 12-day stay there.
VISITATION: 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, at Sunrise Funeral Home, 4798 Miller Trunk Hwy, Hermantown, and at Glen Avon Presbyterian Church, 2105 Woodland Avenue, from noon on Friday, Aug. 3, until the 1:00 p.m. funeral service. Memorials can be directed to the family, who will be using them for a gift to the Solvay Hospice House. Arrangements by Sunrise Funeral Home.

I am deeply saddened by Deans passing. I was co-owner of Murphys lounge & every time they got a new Caddy in, he would call & tell me to look in the showroom window.This always resulted in a sale. He recently called me & suggested we get together on my next visit. I am sorry I won,t have that opportunity. My sympathy to the family. He will be missed by many.
