Fred ‘Freddie’ Frand
Freddie Frand, 79, lifelong resident of Hibbing, died Saturday, July 21, 2012, at the Heritage Manor in Chisholm. He was born on Dec. 20, 1932, to Eino and Sylvia (Itkonen) Frand in Hibbing. Fred served his country for two years in the U.S. Army. He was stationed in England during the Korean Conflict. He later married Phyllis Frand on Sept. 19, 1953, in England. He was employed as a maintenance mechanic for Hanna Mining Company, retiring as a foreman in 1983. Fred, after working at Hanna, held various jobs. He was a representative for Industrial Lubricant of Grand Rapids, and he also worked for Hibbing, Proctor, Grand Rapids, Superior and Bemidji race tracks at various times throughout the past 43 years. His familiar voice that was heard over the intercom each and every race night will be dearly missed by all the drivers and his fans who knew him. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 8510 of Hibbing, the Hanna Retiree’s club, and the 1st Lutheran Church of Hibbing.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Frand, Hibbing, MN.; daughter, Patti Frand, Hibbing; son, Steven (Patricia) Frand, McAllen, TX.; two sisters, Eva (Jim) Porter, and Shirley Hartman, both of Arizona; two grandchildren, Valerie Campbell and Stephanie Frand; sister-in-law, Lorri Frand, Hibbing; many nieces, nephews, cousins and his dog, Maddie.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Eino and Sylvia (Itkonen) Frand; four brothers, Carl, George, Kenneth and Martin Frand; and his sister, Judy Lovegren.
FUNERAL SERVICES: will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, July 25, 2012, at the Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing. The Rev. John Dietz will officiate. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m., funeral service at the funeral home on Wednesday. A private family interment will be held at a later date. Arrangements are with the Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing.
