Edith A. Bloomquist of Virginia, Minn., loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother went to the Lord on May 10, 2012.
Born June 14, 1935 in Wawina, Edie graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1953.
She started her lifelong career as a bookkeeper in Chicago and later worked in Pipestone, Minn. Edie most recently worked in Hibbing at two law offices (Rice; Mulvahill). An active leader and volunteer, she shared her skills for baking and bookkeeping with the Faith Lutheran Church in Chisholm, Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Virginia, Ladies of the Kaleva, and the local Thrivent Board.
Edie was very involved in life and full of unstoppable energy. She had an infectious laugh. She was the ultimate leader and volunteer, the lucky casino player, the excellent cook and baker, the collector of 90+ cookbooks, the vocal fan in the stands during her grandchildren's games, and the incredible Mummi to her great-grandson Evan. Edie loved traveling to Finland, where she formed a special bond with her cousins. She was courageous, generous and willing to change, learn and grow with the times.
Edie was preceded in death by parents, John and Tynne Nuorala; brothers, Arthur, John, Jarlli, and Paul Nuorala; sisters, Irja Smekofski and Marie Henrikson; and former husband, Clarence Maki.
Edie will be deeply missed by husband, Quentin; children, Steve (Leslee) Maki, Susan (Tom) Phelps, Kathy (Mark) Weber, Michael (Lynn) Maki, Linda (Brian) Olson; step-children, Bennet (Joyce) Bloomquist, Paul (Roberta) Bloomquist, Lee (Kathy) Bloomquist; grandchildren, Scott (Karen) Phelps, Kristin (Matt) Luke, Jenny (Neal) Hall, Greg (Julia) Maki, Joe and Dave Weber, Eric, Chris, and Sarah Olson, Ryan and Sam Maki, Anders and Britta Bloomquist, Thomas and Philip Bloomquist, Jaimie and Bethany Bloomquist; great-grandchildren, Erin Janssen and Evan Luke; her siblings, Sulo Nuorala, Tynne Honkala, Miriam Maki, Gertrude Schanche, Wilhart Nuorala, Toini Maroni; dear Finnish relatives and many friends.
SERVICE: 11 a.m. Saturday, May 19, 2012 in Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Virginia. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service in the church. In lieu of flowers, Edie requested memorials to Faith Lutheran Church in Chisholm, Gethsemane Lutheran Church of Virginia, or Lady's of Kaleva-Virginia, Minn. Arrangements are with the Landmark Funeral Home of Virginia.
