Duluth Police Chief Gordon Ramsay helps La’Sheda Metcalf carry toys and food she received from the Salvation Army on Tuesday afternoon. By the end of today, over 1,700 families will have received hams and all the fixings for a family Christmas dinner. Ramsay was just one of about 40 volunteers to help on Tuesday. In all, over 1,800 volunteers will have helped the Salvation Army assemble food boxes, sort toys and help parents and guardians “shop” for toys for children on Monday, Tuesday and today. The gym and all rooms were abuzz with activity. The distribution will continue through noon today. “It makes you feel good that you are helping others,” said Salvation Army Maj. Betsy Cox. “People are thankful and appreciative of what we are doing and Jesus is honored. ... When I was a little girl the Salvation Army helped my family out several years in a row when we went through rough times,” Cox added. (Naomi Yaeger / nyaeger@duluthbudgeteer.com)
