Shape-note singing

Nancy Koester (center) leads a group of shape-note singers at the Duluth Friends Meeting House on Oct. 13, 2012. Using very simple hand gestures, the conductor keeps time and points to one of the four sections of singers when it’s that section’s turn to start singing. There are no instruments to conduct. The singers face one another in four sections — treble, alto, tenor and bass. Singers may also use hand gestures to keep time with the conductor. Anyone may sign up to conduct a song; therefore each song has a new conductor. (Thomas Vaughn / Duluth Budgeteer News)
