DJ Perry, 10, plays with Romeo, a miniature poodle belonging to Denise Lewis during Saturday’s Juneteenth Celebration in Central Hillside. Perry said he was “celebrating,” and that a sister he hadn’t’ seen in a while had just arrived. Lewis said she attended the event to acknowledge Emancipation Day and “Just to see people you haven’t’ seen in a while.” Juneteenth is an African American celebration including picnics, games, educational booths, dance, music and family reunions. It commemorates emancipation, the ending of slavery. The day is celebrated all over the United States on the third Saturday in June.
