The Paul R. Tregurtha turns to make its way under the Aerial Lift Bridge in November 2009. The longest ship on the Great Lakes at 1,013 feet, 6 inches, the Tregurtha was launched in 1981 and can carry a cargo of 68,000 long tons. In December 1999, it ran aground in Duluth’s East Gate Basin and was cleared to sail after no damage was found. It ran aground again in the same place the next day, and was refloated when the Canadian Enterprise lightened its load. The Tregurtha is expected to depart this morning with a load of coal.
