Bishop Thomas Aitken and his wife, Beckie, lay hands on each other’s head during a recent service at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Duluth. The gesture was made as part of an affirmation of baptism. Aitken is the bishop of the ELCA’s Northeastern Minnesota Synod. Five of its churches have taken the first step in leaving the ELCA because of the church’s decision to allow gay clergy.
