The stone marker erected in 1924 when Duluth’s first paved highway opened has been little more than a lawn ornament since 1964, when Constance and Benedict Haller built their house. The couple, lifelong residents of West Duluth, remember when Highway 1 — renamed U.S. Highway 61 when 1927 road maps were printed — was the only highway to and from the Twin Cities.
