Around the time of the Great Depression, the Nelson family opened and operated Cash Grocery at the corner of Lavaque Road and what then was a two-lane Miller Trunk Highway. “I pumped gas all my life, and I remember how terribly cold that nozzle was in winter,” said Hermantown native Esther Nelson Hallock, who self-published her memoirs last year. “If your hand was damp at all, it would freeze. You couldn’t even get it off the pump.”
