Esther Nelson Hallock

At a family reunion this summer in Pike Lake, Esther Nelson Hallock settles behind the wheel of an old Model-T her family has had for decades. She learned to drive, she said, in 1938, when she was 12. And she once had a close encounter while traveling down Lavaque Road toward Miller Trunk Highway “My brake pedal was flat on the floor. There was no brake. And a truck was coming on the highway. When I got there, I turned as hard as I could and wound up driving right alongside that truck. But we didn’t hit.” (Submitted photo)
