To the entire Oakes family... My heart was broken at the news of Larry's passing. He was one of the finest men I ever knew and I have the fondest memories of him as a classmate at Cass Lake High School. Larry always made me laugh and was well loved by all his classmates. I wish I could be with you on Friday in person, but my heart and spirit is with you and the entire family. I know you will celebrate his life in grand fashion! May Peace be with you... Mary Adkins

I too was a journalism student at UMD in the late 70's with Larry. I remember him as a very friendly person who was very easy to convers with. While I didn't end up in the journalism field, I continued to follow his work. I was able to re-connect with him this past year via Facebook. I informed him that my son is a journalism major and looking forward to what lies ahead. Larry should be an inspiration to any aspiring journalist. Condolences to his family and may god rest his soul. Gary Bosiacki Eagan, MN

My heartfelt condolences to Larry's entire family. Though I didn't know him as a friend, he left a lasting impression on me as a journalist. Larry interviewed me back in 2000 for a story he was doing about the Edmund Fitzgerald and my painting of the ship in the storm. Though our conversation was brief, I was struck by his professionalism and genuine interest in what I could contribute to his reporting. He truly made me feel like my art had some meaning and I will never forget our conversation. As a native Duluthian, I always made a point to read his stories of Duluth and the Northland. I was deeply saddened to learn of his passing and wished I had the chance to know him better. May God bring peace and comfort to his family. Sincerely, Don Esse

Patty, There are no words but you have my prayers. I remember so many years ago meeting Larry and you, what a couple with smiles that could excite a room. I will leave it to wiser people to write the great epistles, I can only say you are loved. Let the love and hugs of your children and grandchildren into your heart. Peter Bagley
