Column: Understanding of mental illness should follow gay-rights path

The situation regarding mental illness today is about where acceptance of gays and lesbians was two decades ago. Most Americans are ignorant of the nature and scope of mental illness, which allows the unfair stigma to continue for those suffering such illness.
