Jonathan Scott Hedberg, 30, of Madison, Wis., passed away Saturday, March 2, 2013, at University of Wisconsin Hospital after a skiing accident.

Jonathan Scott Hedberg, 30, of Madison, Wis., passed away Saturday, March 2, 2013, at University of Wisconsin Hospital after a skiing accident.

Jonathan was born April 17, 1982, in Edina, Minn., the son of Scott Hedberg and Catherine (Mahoney) Mensen. Jonathan married Kierre Nelson, originally of Willmar, Minn., Aug. 6, 2011, in Minneapolis.

Jonathan won the Minnesota State Hockey Championship with the Duluth East Greyhounds in 1998. He then played Major Junior Hockey for three years in the OHL (Ontario Hockey League). He was Co-Captain for the hockey team at York University in Toronto, Canada. The York Lions won the Queen’s Cup in 2004. He graduated from York University in 2006 with honors in communications. Jon played professional hockey in New York, Idaho, Pennsylvania, Texas, Mississippi and Germany. He retired in 2009, although continued to play in men’s leagues.

He moved with his wife to Madison in 2010 to support her during residency training. Jonathan was partner and executive recruiter for the company he and his father shared, Hedberg Search, specializing in investment management recruiting. He was also a certified athletic trainer.

He enjoyed hockey, skiing, golf, hunting, fishing, and traveling. Jon also loved spending time with his friends, family and two dogs, Guinness and Heineken. Jonathan was loyal, adventurous, mischievous, the life of the party, and had a great sense of humor.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Warren and Florence Mahoney, and Raymond and Betty Hedberg, all of Minneapolis.

Jon is survived by his wife, Kierre (Nelson) Hedberg, of Madison; parents Scott Hedberg of Edina, Minn., and Catherine Mensen of Duluth; stepfather Gerald Mensen; stepbrother James Mensen, also of Duluth; brother-in-law John Ryan Nelson of Minneapolis; father-in-law John Nelson of Willmar; and numerous other relatives and friends.

A GATHERING TO CELEBRATE JON’S LIFE: 7 p.m. to midnight Saturday, March 16, in the Metropolitan Ballroom and Clubroom in Golden Valley, Minn.
