The accomplishments of 10 local women were celebrated on Wednesday as the American Heart Association had its annual Go Red For Women luncheon.
The women set goals to improve their heart health over 10 weeks with help from medical professionals at Essentia Health and St. Luke’s hospital and free memberships and training sessions from Northstar Health and Fitness, the YMCA and Anytime Fitness.
The participants and some of their accomplishments, according to the American Heart Association:
Kamala Hanskala of Duluth lost 20 pounds and cut her prescription medications in half.Carol Carrasca of Duluth lost 20 pounds.Jenny Wannemacher of Duluth extended her daily workout time from 40 minutes to 90 minutes and started kickboxing.Kristine Sanvig of Esko reduced her blood pressure from 205/101 to 121/72 and dropped two pants sizes.Amy McClellan of Superior significantly improved her walking and decreased pain in her back and hips. She invested time in preparing food and exercising and stayed out of the drive-through.Brenda Toms of Duluth reached her goal by losing 21 pounds.Yvonne Hansen-Almos of Duluth lost 20 pounds, lowered her cholesterol and no longer is considered pre-diabetic.Kris Walden of Duluth cut her triglycerides in half, lost 22 pounds and went from jogging a half-mile to five miles.Melissa Frohrip of Duluth lost weight, and her family has joined her in trips to the grocery store and taking time to read labels for sodium, fat and serving sizes.Katie Kaylor of Duluth lost 23 pounds in addition to 30 pounds lost before the challenge. She also lost two pants sizes, and her cholesterol and other heart numbers have dramatically improved.
