HIRES AND PROMOTIONS

  • DSGW Architects in Duluth announced Native American designer Michael Laverdure was promoted to partner. He will lead DSGW’s First American Design Studio with the focus on developing communities in Indian Country and creating opportunities for Native Americans to become fully engaged in design and construction.

    Laverdure is an enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa in North Dakota. He is a board member of Minnesota’s American Indian Chamber of Commerce and a Sequoyah member of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society. Laverdure graduated from North Dakota State University’s College of Architecture and is finishing his architectural registration exams. Once completed, he will be one of a select few Native American architects in the country.

  • Dr. Emily Anderson joined Lake Superior Community Health Center as medical director.

    A board-certified family physician, Anderson attended medical school at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in Minneapolis and completed her residency at the Duluth Family Medicine Residency Program. She previously worked at an independent clinic in Cumberland, Wis., providing a full spectrum of family medicine.

  • Eagle Accounting hired Zack Filipovich as an in-house staff accountant. He previously was a business development and marketing intern at Area Partnership for Economic Expansion.

    Filipovich graduated from the University of Minnesota Duluth in 2012 with a degree in accounting. While at UMD he received the university’s prestigious Sieur Du Luth award.

  • David Sadowski was named a partner at SwimCreative in Duluth. Previously a contracted art director, Sadowski is a principal of the company and responsible for branding.

    Sadowski began his advertising career at SK+G Advertising in Las Vegas, where he worked on a number projects for businesses such as MGM Mirage Corp., Atlantis, Palms Place Condominiums and Wolfgang Puck Restaurants. He went on to work at WestmorelandFlint in Duluth, where his clients included SMDC Foundation, Fortune Bay Resort Casino, Spirit Mountain and more.

    Sadowski received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota Duluth and his post-graduate degree from Brainco: Minneapolis School of Advertising.

  • Black Woods Restaurants announced the following hires and promotions.

    Martha Bremer was hired as a sales director. Bremer comes to the Black Woods family with a deep sales background working for a period with ZMC Hotels out of Duluth and the 4 Points by Sheraton Minneapolis Airport. She will oversee all sales for the Black Woods Banquet Center and Black Woods off-site Catering.

    Brook Rodberg was named director of operations and events for Black Woods Banquet Center. Rodberg has been with Black Woods for more than 12 years and has a rich restaurant and operations background. She was the original general manager of Black Water Lounge and more recently served as associate general manager of Black Woods on London Road. Rodberg will oversee all operations for Black Woods Banquet Center and Black Woods off-site Catering.

    Fran Bussey was named corporate director of catering and events. He will oversee all sales and operations for Black Woods Catering, which includes Greysolon Ballroom by Black Woods, Black Woods Banquet Center and Black Woods off-site Catering. Bussey spent the past 12 years at ZMC Hotels, where he specialized in food and beverage services and assisted in the opening of the Edgewater Resort and Waterpark in 2005.

    AWARDS AND RECOGNITIONS

  • Terry Mattson, president and CEO of Visit Duluth, was named Minnesota’s Outstanding Individual in Tourism by Explore Minnesota Tourism.

    Mattson has almost 30 years of experience leading Duluth’s visitor industry, including 23 years heading Visit Duluth. In 1991, he created what is now known as the Amsoil Duluth National Snocross, and beginning in 2008, he developed a series of maritime festivals for Duluth, culminating in Tall Ships Duluth 2010.

    In 1985 Mattson joined Visit Duluth, with the responsibility for developing major special events. His first event was Grandma’s Marathon that year. Before becoming president in 1990, he was in charge of public relations and sales.

    Mattson has served as president of the Minnesota Association of

    Convention and Visitors Bureaus, and currently serves with both the Minnesota Tourism Advisory Council and the Minnesota Tourism Growth Coalition.

  • The Minnesota Construction Association announced the University of Minnesota Duluth’s James I. Swenson Civil Engineering Building project was the winner of the 2013 Award of Excellence in the green/sustainable construction category. The award was announced during the Jan. 23 MCA Awards of Excellence gala at the Minneapolis Golf Club. Stahl Construction, based in St. Louis Park, Minn., was the general contractor on the project and accepted the award.

    INTERN

  • Lake Superior Physical Therapy Inc. announced Anika Tideman is serving as a physical therapy student intern. Tideman is completing her final 10-week clinical rotation and will treat patients at the West Duluth and University of Minnesota Duluth clinics.

    She is a Duluth native, graduating from East High School in 2005. Tideman received her bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in 2009 and is pursuing her doctorate in physical therapy from the College of St. Scholastica.

    NEW BUSINESS

  • The Art of Hair on London announced Christiane “Kiki” Erspamer joined the business in mid-February. Erspamer is a licensed massage therapist, registered yoga teacher, Reiki practitioner and Ayurvedic-trained specialist. Her office and therapy room are upstairs.

    Erspamer operates Holistic Path, which focuses on Ayurvedic massage and bodywork. Hers the first business of its kind in the community, and she uses authentic Ayurvedic equipment and products.

  • Terri Wallen of Duluth recently became an independent sales

  • Hobby Lobby Stores will celebrate the opening of the Duluth arts and crafts store with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and celebration at 9 a.m. today at the business, the former Kmart building on Mall Drive and Maple Grove Road.
