  • The Minnesota Legislative Building Committee yesterday recommended a drastic cutback in requested funds for construction at UMD and other state facilities. UMD’s request for $10.55 million was slashed to $1.06 million and does not include social science or health science buildings.

  • Leaders of the group Options in Education said yesterday they want the Duluth School Board to decide before this spring’s elections about the organization’s proposal to establish an open school. In an open school, students and parents make most decisions on what is studied.

  • The man who robbed the St. Louis Bank in Duluth at gunpoint yesterday may be responsible for a string of bank holdups, including one in Two Harbors two weeks ago. Security camera photographs show what appears to be the same man.

  • A bulldozer that broke through ice at a Fraser Shipyards slip this week was pulled ashore yesterday. The bulldozer sank in about 30 feet of water, but the operator surfaced immediately and was helped out of the water by fellow workers.
