The Duluth News Tribune’s coverage of severe flooding in the Northland last June received top honors for breaking news coverage and use of social media on Thursday at the annual Minnesota Newspaper Association convention in Bloomington.
Those were among seven first-place awards and 27 awards overall the paper received in the 2011-12 Better Newspaper Contest. That’s up from 15 awards received last year.
The entire News Tribune newsroom was honored for its breaking-news coverage of the record flooding. The newspaper’s social media presence during the flooding, led by multimedia editors Andrew Krueger and Jimmy Bellamy, also received first-place honors from the contest judges.
The News Tribune also received top honors for headline writing and for its website (duluthnewstribune.com). Editorial Page Editor Chuck Frederick was named best columnist, and Photo Editor Bob King won first place in the news photo category for his picture of a man smoking synthetic marijuana at Lake Place Park.
Reporter John Myers and former Investigations Editor Brandon Stahl were honored for best use of public records for their coverage of missed assessments in St. Louis County.
