Our view: DFL faces opportunity and pressure

The Minnesota Legislature goes back to work Tuesday with the DFL in control of the House, Senate and governor’s office for the first time in more than 20 years.

The Minnesota Legislature goes back to work Tuesday with the DFL in control of the House, Senate and governor’s office for the first time in more than 20 years.

That’s either an opportunity (single-party control suggests gridlock-free

decision-making) or a burden (the pressures on DFL lawmakers will be great,

especially the pressure to raise taxes and spend).

The reality is lawmakers have a budget to tackle first.

But other issues — including the prospect of a bonding bill even though it’s an off-year, same-sex marriage, education finance, synthetic drugs and more — already are creeping into the conversation.

Count on an interesting few months ahead. But don’t take our word for it. Consider the predictions, expectations and thoughts of a few of our Northland lawmakers, as shared this past week exclusively with the News Tribune Opinion page for publication here today.
