There’s positive news about Wisconsin teens as well: Youth smoking rates in the state have hit an all-time low, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported this week.

The drop was particularly steep during the last two years: from 17.7 percent in 2010 to 13.1 percent in 2012 among high school students, news releases from the American Cancer Society and from Smoke Free Wisconsin noted. Middle school smoking decreased from 3.9 percent to 2.5 percent during the same period.

The numbers are based on a survey conducted in 40 high schools and 42 middle schools across the state during the spring of 2012.
