A longtime Duluth physician and deputy St. Louis County medical examiner died Friday when his plane crashed in Wyoming.
The family and colleagues of Dr. Donald Kundel, 79, confirmed to the News Tribune today that Kundel died Friday afternoon when his plane crashed near Laramie Regional Airport.
The Laramie Boomerang newspaper reported that officials in Wyoming said Kundel was on his way to Laramie to visit his son.
The crash sparked a fire that burned about 30 acres, the newspaper reported.
The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported that Kundel was the only person aboard the plane, and that the Federal Aviation Administration had no immediate word on the cause of the crash.
Kundel was chief medical examiner of St. Louis County for many years up until 2000, when he stepped down to become a deputy in the office.
He testified in St. Louis County District Court on Thursday during a murder trial stemming from a fatal bar fight in Proctor last year.
Kundel also was a pathologist at St. Luke's hospital for many years.
