Duluth had some special visitors the last weekend in July and first weekend in August: Thomas the Tank Engine, Sir Topham Hatt, and a driver (in American English, we’d call him an engineer).
“Thomas the Tank engine was on vacation from his work on the Island of Sodor, but being “a most useful engine” he wanted to do what he does best — pull trains,” said Ken Buehler, executive director of the Lake Superior Railroad Museum. “We were very fortunate to have him here, and he was very popular.”
Over the two weekends he and his friends were in Duluth, 11,471 people came to visit him.
“The best part about Thomas is that he energizes a new generation that — when they outgrow Thomas — will grow up with an appreciation, interest and affection for railroads, railroad history and role of railroads in our economy today,” Buehler said.
