Minnesota Ballet: The ballet is estimating that 90 percent of its sets and hand-painted drops were damaged when a storage facility flooded. Donations can be made to Minnesota Ballet, 301 W. It also has made available its Camp Noah program, which is designed to help children recover emotionally from natural disasters. Put “Duluth disaster response” on the memo line.Carlton County: A center to coordinate volunteers and donations is operating at the Cloquet National Guard Armory. Wells Fargo Bank is accepting tax-deductible donations at all of its branches nationwide to the Carlton County Flood Relief Fund.United Way of Greater Duluth: To help with recovery efforts within the city or surrounding area or assist on the rehabilitation of parks and trails, go to duluthmn.gov and click on Declaration of Emergency — City of Duluth Flood Emergency Information or go to volunteerduluth.org and click on “give help.” This is a centralized volunteer registration database that will match availability with areas that need help.United Way of Greater Duluth will serve as the fiscal host for the Twin Ports Region Long-Term Flood Recovery Fund to support victims of the recent flooding with long-term unmet needs. You can contribute to the fund at the following locations: M&I Banks in Duluth and Superior and all US Bank locations. Sappi’s Cloquet mill resumes production in wake of flood damage
While Sappi’s Cloquet mill workers were still actively engaged in flood cleanup efforts this week, most of the mill’s operations were up and running by Tuesday night.
According to mill manager Rick Dwyer, the St. Louis River crested late Thursday and by Friday mill personnel knew they were pretty much out of the woods. They had sandbagged outside the shipping area and were able to limit damage to the work in progress and finished goods inventory, Dwyer said.
By Wednesday morning the mill had most of its manufacturing processes up and running and all loading docks were fully operational.
Dwyer said insurance will cover much of the mill’s losses, adding that there is no record of the mill ever being flooded from the river in the past. A flooded basement in 1991 was caused by overflow from the city water line after a storm.
