Memorial Day events and holiday closings

Sunrise Memorial Park in Hermantown will host its annual Memorial Day service today starting at 9 a.m.
The ceremony, titled “Remembering Our Fallen Heroes,” will run from 9 until 10:30 a.m. and include military honors by the Duluth Combine Honor Guard; a flag presentation by the Duluth Sea Cadets Honor Guard; the Duluth Bible Church Patriotic Choir; and several speakers, including Col. Penny Dieryck of the 148th Fighter Wing; Dr. Andrew Chiu from Essentia Health; and Wayne Johnson, who fought in World War II with the Flying Tigers.
The ceremony will be followed by free refreshments from 10:30 a.m. to noon. A large tent will be set up, so events will go on rain or shine.
Sunrise Memorial Park is at the corner of Miller Trunk Highway and Arrowhead Road.

BROOKSTON
Tester Niemi Post 562 of Brookston will conduct color guard services today at the following cemeteries:

CloquetVeterans Park, 11 a.m. today. Patriotic music by the Cloquet Community Band, followed by a flag-raising ceremony at 11:30 a.m. The address will be delivered by Chaplain Dennis Morriem of Community Memorial Hospital.

The Duluth Honor Guard will make the following visits today.

Memorial service, 5 p.m. Wednesday, at the Korean War Memorial on the Lakewalk near The Pickwick restaurant and near the Vietnam Memorial. This service is sponsored by the B Company Marines and the dedication is in honor of all Korean War veterans and will include the Combined Honor Guard firing a salute, a prayer from a pastor, a bagpiper, and singer Mary Rose Varo. Memorial service and 20th anniversary dedication, 6 p.m. Wednesday, Northland Vietnam Memorial on the Lakewalk. Features former Mayor John Fedo and his wife, Lori, singer Mark Rubin, Mayor Don Ness, bagpipes, wreath-placing, rifle salute and taps. Following the ceremony, gather at Midi Restaurant to hear additional speakers, award-winning essays and Brett Small, combat veteran and songwriter. Call Durbin at (218) 590-3156.

SILVER BAY
Silver Bay Community Program at Silver Bay Veterans Home, 10:30 a.m. today, with refreshments to follow.

TWO HARBORS
Two Harbors Community Program, 9:30 a.m. today at high school auditorium with patriotic music by the Two Harbors City Band. Formal program starts at 10 a.m. People who are willing are asked to proceed afterward to the Agate Bay boat landing to place floral arrangements on the water in honor of Navy and Coast Guard fallen. Later there will be a gathering at Lakeview Cemetery veterans section flagpole for full military honors and the raising of the flag to full staff.
At the conclusion of the flag ceremony, a picnic-style luncheon will be served at the American Legion Post in downtown Two Harbors.

VIRGINIA
Memorial Day Service, 1 p.m. today, Florenton Cemetery, 7449 Highway 169, Virginia. Features Mt. Iron Legion No. 220 Honor Guard.

Holiday closings
Today is Memorial Day. The following will be closed:
Post offices in Duluth and Superior; Duluth and Superior city offices; St. Louis County and Douglas County offices; Minnesota and Wisconsin state offices; Minnesota and Wisconsin federal offices; all Duluth library locations and Superior library; Duluth and Superior schools; Fond du Lac Reservation tribal offices; STRIDE services; and Western Lake Superior Sanitary District facilities except for Yard Waste.
Open: Duluth Transit Authority will operate a limited holiday service schedule for regular routes.
