Eh?: The new thing in library books

Yes, you can still check out real books at the library, but there’s something new on the horizon.

Yes, you can still check out real books at the library, but there’s something new on the horizon.

By the end of this month, the Duluth Public Library says it will have two Nooks and two eReaders you can check out with your library card. Each will be loaded with 20 classic titles and 20 best-sellers and will be available for up to four-week loans.

You can learn how to use them during sessions at 7 p.m. Monday and 2 p.m. May 26 in the Green Room at the main library (520 W. Superior St.). Besides learning about the new digital readers, you also will learn how to check out eBooks from home using your own reader.

Bus riders’ reward

If gas prices haven’t convinced you to try other ways of getting to work, here’s one more incentive:

You can get in a free prize drawing by pledging to try an alternative to driving at least once before Sept. 30. Whether you promise to ride the bus, car pool, bike or walk doesn’t matter. Just try something other than

driving your car.

Make the pledge at duluthtransit.com. The Minnesota Department of Transportation will announce drawing winners by Oct. 1.

Where to find health-care help

Anyone who has health-care needs that insurance isn’t covering should consider stopping at Ruby’s Pantry between 3:30 and 7 p.m. Thursday.

Ruby’s Pantry is a food distribution program at First United Methodist Church (that’s the copper-top church; $15 cash gets you about $80 worth of

groceries). This week they’re hosting an info-and-application session for programs that can help with things such as prescriptions, eyeglasses and other health-care needs.

They say applications for many programs will be done on the spot.
