Eh? UMD orchard effort needs votes

The University of Minnesota Duluth is participating in an online popularity contest that could help it turn an abandoned apple orchard into a new “Heritage Orchard” with regionally adapted fruit trees.

The Communities Take Root contest is sponsored by Edy’s Fruit Bars with the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation. UMD says Edy’s and the foundation are planning to give the five locations with the most votes a new fruit orchard and free help managing it. UMD hopes to plant the new orchard at the site of an old University orchard test station on Jean Duluth Road.

As of Monday, the UMD effort was in fifth place, down from third last week. Vote at CommunitiesTakeRoot.com. You can vote once a day through the end of the month.

Lincoln Park School wants your memories

Organizers of an extravaganza to celebrate the legacy of Lincoln Park school would like to hear from you if you’ve got memories, pictures or stories to share.

Lincoln Park students will be attending the new Piedmont Elementary School in September.

Extravaganza organizers are planning building tours and a display of past memorabilia from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 2, and commemorative T-shirts will be available.

Your bus to school

This year, you’ll have more chances to take the city bus to summer school — at Lake Superior College anyway.

At LSC’s request, the Duluth Transit Authority will maintain one afternoon arrival and two afternoon departure trips from LSC to downtown Duluth on Route 9 from June 1 through July 26. Traditionally, these Route 9 trips are provided only during fall and spring semester and suspended during the summer.

The afternoon route from downtown will depart the Holiday Center, 207 W. Superior St., at 3:35 p.m. and arrive at LSC at 3:39 p.m. Two routes will leave LSC in the afternoon, one at 3:02 p.m., arriving at the Downtown Transit Center at 3:17 p.m. and one at 4:02 p.m. arriving at 4:17 p.m.
