A 10-inch sewer pipe broke Tuesday afternoon in the Gary-New Duluth neighborhood, sending an estimated 33,000 gallons of untreated sewage near
96th Avenue West.
It’s unclear what caused the pipe to break, but most of the sewage was being diverted into an overflow basin designed to hold sewage overflow during heavy rainstorms, Western Lake Superior Sanitary District officials said.
A contractor has been called to repair the pipe and is expected to finish the job today. People should avoid contact with the sewage.
