A large Western Lake Superior Sanitary District sewer pipe broke this afternoon in the Gary-New Duluth neighborhood, sending an estimated 33,000 gallons of untreated sewage near 96th Avenue West.
WLSSD said it’s unclear what caused the pipe to break but that most of the sewage was being diverted into the district’s nearby overflow basin designed to hold sewage overflow during heavy rainstorms.
A contractor has been called to repair the pipe and is expected to finish the job Wednesday. People should avoid contact with the sewage.
