Rink and Run blog: UMD men and women No. 3 in USCHO polls
By: Kevin Pates, Duluth News Tribune
Monday’s U.S. College Hockey Online polls for men and women are further down, with the Minnesota Duluth men and women at No. 3. It’s the highest poll position for the UMD men since Nov. 1, 2004, when ranked No. 2 by USCHO. The UMD men are also No. 3 in the USA Today-USA Hockey Magazine poll. And St. Scholastica checks in at No. 11 in the U.S. College Hockey Online Division III preseason men's poll.
From Sunday, Minnesota broke a three-game losing streak by defeating St. Cloud State 2-1 at Mariucci Arena. Jacob Cepis and red-hot Jay Barriball (6) had goals for the Gophers, and Brett Barta scored for the Huskies. Goalie Kent Patterson (2-0) got the win. Minnesota freshman center Nick Bjugstad, the 2010 Minnesota Mr. Hockey, is expected to miss at least five games with mononucleosis. The St. Cloud Times has a story here and the Minneapolis Star Tribune has a game story here.
Also, UMD recruit Caleb Herbert of Bloomington, Minn., has been named to the USA Junior Select team for the World Junior A Challenge on Nov. 8-14 in Penticton, British Columbia. The center is the leading scorer this season with Sioux City (Iowa) in the U.S. Hockey League with six goals and four assists for 10 points in seven games (he ranks No. 2 in the league). The complete USA roster is here.
Also, UMD recruit Tony Cameranesi continues to lead the Upper Midwest High School Elite League heading toward the league playoffs which run Friday through Sunday in New Hope, Minn. He has 15 goals and 16 assists for 31 points in 21 games.
