Mayor Don Ness had some game back in the day when he played for the Duluth Central Trojans. Not sure if your slam dunking and trick ball handling will be enough to faze him.

The comedy team that includes former college athletes — and has a style that sounds a lot like another crew of ball players from Harlem — takes on a local celebrity lineup including Ness, Duluth Deputy

Police Chief Robin Roeser, St. Louis County Attorney Melanie Ford, Park State Bank President Dale Lewis and Dr. Sheri Bergeron in a game at 3 p.m. Sunday at Mertz Mortorelli Gym at the University of Wisconsin-Superior.

It’s a fundraiser for the Duluth Family Visitation Center.

Nielson in hunt again for coach of the year

UMD tells us that Bob Nielson, head football coach, is in the running again for Liberty Mutual’s Coach of the Year Contest.

If Nielson wins, Duluth charities and UMD also win — up to $70,000.

Last year Nielson was neck-and-neck with Mel Tjeerdsma of Northwest Missouri State University and was edged out by only 2,000 votes. This year he’s in first place so far, at least as of Tuesday evening.

Chester Bowl Fallfest on Saturday

A bigger and better Chester Bowl Fallfest is set for Saturday at Chester Bowl Park in Duluth, 1801 E. Skyline Parkway.

The 26th annual event features more than 100 booths with fresh produce, local foods, handmade pottery and jewelry as well as local artisans and continuing live music. There will be hand-dipped caramel apples, fresh-pressed apple cider and locally grown sweet corn, dipped in warm butter.

Gates will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., longer hours than past years. Parking is limited, so try a UMD parking lot along College Street and ride one of two shuttles.

A $2 donation is accepted at the gate, with all proceeds going to Chester Bowl programs. If it rains hard the event may be moved to Sunday, same time.
