Sunday, Sept. 12

A benefit for Lori Lynn Rasmussen, who has been undergoing chemotherapy to battle non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Billings Park Civic Center in Superior, 3903 N. 18th St. A spaghetti dinner will be followed by a Rubber Chicken Theater performance. Cost is $10 for adults, $6 for ages 4-12 and free for those 3 and younger. Call 343-3933.

Lake Superior Zoo will celebrate Grandparents’ Day and the lions’ third birthday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be free train rides from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Kick Off for Kids, which includes a number of healthy activities for area youth (K-12 primarily), will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. at Bayfront Festival Park. Free and open to the public. See www.dyacduluth.org for details.

Men as Peacemakers’ fifth annual Bob Brenning Bike Ride for Peace will start at 1 p.m. in front of Fitger’s. (Registration is at noon.) Cost is $15 for students, $35 for individuals and $40 for a family of any size. Save $5 by registering at www.menaspeacemakers.org/bikeride.

Dances of Universal Peace will meet from 3 to 5 p.m. above the Electric Fetus at 10 E. Superior St. There will be a free-will donation. Call 391-0260.

Monday, Sept. 13

A public input session on parking in downtown Duluth will be held at 8 a.m. at the Holiday Inn in the Great Lakes Ballroom. Initial findings will be presented at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Radisson. (Cost for breakfast will be $15; RSVP by calling 727-8549.)

There will be a free open skate session for adults (21 and older) from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Heritage Sports Center, 120 S. 30th Ave. W. Bring your own skates.

A circle of poets and appreciators of poetry will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Two Harbors Public Library. An after-party will be held at Black Woods.

Mountain Iron’s Holiday Inn Express & Suites will host the sixth annual Iron Range Housekeeping Olympics at 11 a.m. Call 741-7411 for details.

The Hobo Nephews of Uncle Frank’s Teague Alexy plays around 9 p.m. every Monday night at Sir Ben’s through the end of September. Outside (weather permitting).

Kathy McTavish plays cello music every Monday at 9 p.m. at Carmody Irish Pub.

Learn how to do the salsa with Megan Abel every Monday at 7 p.m. at Grandma’s Sports Garden in Canal Park. There is no cost for the lesson, and open dancing from 8 to 10 p.m. is free as well. All ages.

Tuesday, Sept. 14

Mark Olson, a founding member of the Jayhawks and the Creekdippers, will perform at 10 p.m. at Pizza Lucé. Cory Chisel is also on the bill. Cost is $14.

The folk duo of Bill and Kate Isles puts on a free variety show at Clyde Iron Works, 2902 W. Michigan St., at 6:30 p.m. every Tuesday through Dec. 28.

“Election Day” will be screened at 3 p.m. in Room 273B of the Kirby Student Center at UMD.

Wednesday, Sept. 15

The League of Women Voters and the Citizens Federation will sponsor a District 6 House and Senate candidate forum at Lakewood Town Hall, 3110 Strand Road. Scheduled to appear: Sen. Tom Bakk, Jennifer Havlick, Rep. Mary Murphy and Keith MacDonald.

The DECC will induct Jim Denney, Roy Griak, Larry Ross and Jerry Ujdur into its Athletic Hall of Fame at 7 p.m. at the Harbor Side Convention Center. Cost is $25. Call 727-0947.

Tim Kaiser will perform during the SFA Farmers’ Market at UMD, which is held from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. every Wednesday near the Kirby Plaza bus hub.

Thursday, Sept. 16

The United Way’s annual chili cook-off/campaign kickoff will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the DECC. Cost is $6 for adults, $3 for children or $16 for a family.

Learn about the Greater Downtown Council’s holiday lighting scheme at 7:30 a.m. at 5 W. First St. Its window display contest will be back this year, and the Christmas City of the North Parade is coming up on Nov. 19.

Crew Jones, Lion or Gazelle and Cakes of Light will perform at 9 p.m. at the NorShor. Cost is $5. Must be 21.

Horton’s Gym will host “Battle of the Golden Gloves Champs” at 7 p.m. at Grandma’s Sports Garden. Cost is $15 at the door.

Laurie Hertzel will read from and sign “News to Me: Adventures of an Accidental Journalist” at 7 p.m. at Fitger’s Spirit of the North Theater.
