Sunday, Aug. 29

The second annual Bubble Festival will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Duluth Children’s Museum in Clyde Park. This free event includes an open ice skate and rock climbing (must be 6 or older).

The free Movies in the Park series at Leif Erikson Park returns with a screening of “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa” at dusk. (This is a rain date.)

Minnesota Women of Today will host a free picnic from 3 to 5 p.m. at Enger Tower Park. Youth activities provided; bring a dish to share.

The North Shore Scenic Railroad will have a six-hour steam train excursion to Two Harbors departing from the Depot at 10:30 a.m. Cost is $45. Call (800) 423-1273.

Joy Kills Sorrow will perform at 7:30 p.m. at Beaner’s Central. Cost is $15.

Regular screenings at Zinema 2 this week: “Restrepo,” “Micmacs,” “The Kids are All Right,” Banksy’s “Exit Through the Gift Shop” and “The Girl Who Played with Fire” (Sunday through Thursday) and “The Kids are All Right” (Friday and Saturday). Details at www.zinema2.com.

Through Labor Day, Duluth’s Omnimax Theatre will offer $5 Imax movies every hour on the hour from noon to 7 p.m., seven days a week. The films are “Mysteries of the Great Lakes” (noon), “Dinosaurs Alive” (1 p.m.), “Stormchasers” (2 p.m.), “Alaska” (3 p.m.), “Magic of Flight” (4 p.m.), “Amazon” (5 p.m.), “Dolphins” (6 p.m.) and “Mysteries of the Great Lakes” (7 p.m.). Monday, Aug. 30

The Latin America dance and music experience “Drums! Dance! Duluth!” will be performed at 8 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 30-Sept. 1, at Teatro Zuccone. Cost is $10.

Bill & Kate Isles will perform at 7:30 p.m. at the Clyde Iron Works Event Center with acclaimed fiddle player April Verch. Tickets range from $10 to $20 at the door; visit www.billandkateisles.com for advance-sale discounts.

Tuesday, Aug. 31

Mayor Don Ness will host the next “Mayor’s Night” with Duluth citizens starting at 5 p.m. at City Hall (Room 405). The event continues until everyone who signs up gets a chance to speak to Ness and his staff about concerns.

Singles Activities Group, for those 45 and older, will meet for coffee and conversation at 11 a.m. at the London Road Perkins. Call 722-6828.

Local singer/songwriter Angela Brannan will perform at 9:30 p.m. at the Brewhouse. Free.

The National Alliance of Mental Illness will meet at 7 p.m. at Miller Dwan (Rooms 1-3). The movie “Coming Home: Supporting Your Soldier” will be screened. A discussion will follow. Wednesday, Sept. 1

Dennis Hale will sign “Shipwrecked: Reflections of the Sole Survivor” from 3 to 4 p.m. at Northern Lights Books & Gifts in Canal Park.

A free back-to-school presentation about the differences between how boys and girls learn will be held at 6 p.m. at Proctor High School. It will be presented by Kathy Stevens, co-author of “The Minds of Boys.”

The Duluth Farmers’ Market is open from 7 a.m. to noon every Wednesday and Saturday at 14th Avenue East and Third Street.

A free open mic night will be held at Beaner’s Central from 7 to 11 p.m.

Leif Hinkel will perform during the SFA Farmers’ Market at UMD, which is held from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. every Wednesday near the Kirby Plaza bus hub.

For the Rock the Block season finale, rocker Eddie Money will put on a free show at 6 p.m. in front of Fond du Luth Casino on Superior Street.

Exhibits

A new collection of original Nancy Stone paintings in oil will be on display through Tuesday at Pizza Luce.

“Blu Dot” will be the featured collection at UMD’s Tweed Museum of Art through Sept. 5.

Original oil paintings and jewelry pieces from Nancy Stone will be on display through Sept. 6 at Moxie Hollow, 202 E. Superior St.

The Duluth Art Institute’s Emerging Photographers Exhibition 2010 will be on display through Sept. 6 at the Depot’s Corridor Gallery.

“Connecting with the Ancients,” earthenware by Martye Allen and photography by Embree Hale Jr., will be on display through Sept. 12 at Lizzard’s downtown. See www.lizzards.com.

Selections from the Potlatch collection of Royal Canadian Mounted Police illustrations will be on display through Sept. 12 at UMD’s Tweed Museum of Art.
