Someone should check your hormones
The medical school at UMD is offering to check your hormones. And your blood pressure.
They’re seeking volunteers to participate in a study related to blood pressure funded by the National Institutes of Health. Participants will be paid to attend two afternoon laboratory sessions, and the study includes blood pressure and hormonal assessment during “brief behavioral challenges.”
Volunteers should be free from major medical disorders. Smokers are particularly welcome to participate, they say.

United Way softball tourney rescheduled
A softball tournament to support the United Way of Superior-Douglas County has been rescheduled for Sept. 24 because of rain last week.
The first Go to Bat for United Way Softball Tournament, with teams including high school students, beauticians, accountants and bartenders, was postponed Friday because of rain. Coincidentally, United Way tried to launch the tournament last year, but it was canceled — because of weather.
Avalon wins one of those vote-a-grant contests
You know how a lot of organizations these days like to drag people to their websites by asking them to vote for their favorite charities to receive some sort of grant?
Well, it looks like the Duluth area actually voted one local charity a $25,000 payday.
The Avalon Educational Institute finished fourth out of 300 competing ideas to win a $25,000 grant from Pepsi’s Refresh Everything competition. They just got word Monday that they’re allowed to brag about it. Avalon, a Duluth arts program funded by its own students’ fundraising efforts, was one of 32 national grant recipients for July.
They say the grant money will provide equipment for Avalon’s free gymnastics, dance and martial arts programs.
If you’re interested in the school you can drop in at their open houses 6-8 p.m. Sept. 10 and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 11 at 404 W. Superior St.
