Sunday, Aug. 1

“Annie,” this year’s All City High School Musical, will be staged at 7:30 p.m. July 29-31 and at 2 p.m. Aug. 1 at Central High School. Cost is $10 for adults and $7 for students and seniors.

Coinciding with the Tall Ships Festival, International Explorations’ Treasure Adventure will be presented at Railroad Street and Eighth Avenue West during the following times: from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. July 28-Aug. 2 and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 3-8. Treasure Adventure is a 9,050-square-foot indoor venue featuring treasure artifacts. Cost is $7 for adults and $3 for children younger than 12. Through Labor Day, Duluth’s Omnimax Theatre will offer $5 Imax movies every hour on the hour from noon to 7 p.m., seven days a week. Monday, Aug. 2

The Central High School Class of ’43 will meet for the last time today. Its 67th class reunion will be held at 11 a.m. at the Kitchi Gammi Club, 831 E. Superior St. RSVP by calling 525-5613.

The free Vibe Show event, featuring live poetry and music, will be held at 7 p.m. at CHUM, 121 N. First Ave. W. Scheduled performers include Aurora Baer, Kyle Elden, Patrick McKinnson and Bill Meier. All ages.

Tuesday, Aug. 3

CHUM is sponsoring a National Night Out street fest at 6 p.m. on First Avenue West between First and Second Street. Food served during first hour.

A National Night Out community corn feed will be held at 6 p.m. at Salem Covenant Church, 339 N. 59th Ave. W. There will be hot dogs, corn and fun and games for the whole family. Call 624-4859.

A National Night Out neighborhood picnic will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church, 6822 Grand Ave. Everyone is welcome.

Take Time for Kids, an annual community event with a live and silent auction and entertainment, will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Depot in the Great Hall. Proceeds benefit LSS Bethany Crisis Nursery.

The Young Athletes Foundation and Grandma’s Marathon invite children 14 and younger to lace up their shoes and take part in Wednesday Night at the Races. This week’s free races (including a Courage Center Duluth wheelchair division) will be held at Griggs Field on the UMD campus. Ashley Northey will host the free weekly open mic night at Beaner’s Central from 7 to 11 p.m.

Saturday, Aug. 7

Duluth native Hans Johnson and his wife, Naisiae Nakola, will sign their new children’s book, “Elephant and Hare” (the first installment of their “Safari Kids” series), from noon to 1 p.m. at Northern Lights Books & Gifts in Canal Park. Following that couple will be Paul Kilgore, who will sign “Losing Camille” from 1 to 2 p.m.

Local band Loup-Garou, Eau Claire’s Feathe and Nilla will perform at 8 p.m. at Beaner’s Central. Cost is $5.

The Western Garden Tour, which is put on by Norton Park United Methodist Church, will be held today in conjunction with Spirit Valley Days. Stop by the church (at 436 N. 79th Ave. W.) between 9 and 11 a.m. to eat breakfast and pick up maps to the featured gardens. Then, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., take you and yours on a self-guided tour of said plotted displays. Cost is $8.

The first day of Scanlon’s weekend-long party to support our troops will be held at the city’s community center, 2801 Dewey Ave. Scheduled events: a flag-raising ceremony at 7:45 a.m.; a pancake breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m.; a vendor show and silent auction from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; a barbecue from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; a magic show from 11 a.m. to noon; fire truck rides from noon to 3 p.m.; carnival games from noon to 4 p.m.; and a performance by the Chmielewskis at 6 p.m. Prices TBA; proceeds go to care packages for the troops. Exhibits

To coincide with the Tall Ships festival, nine Downtown Waterfront galleries will be displaying “Art of the Inland Sea” through Tuesday. The participating galleries are: Art Dock, Blue Lake Gallery, Crayon Art Gallery, Duluth Art Institute, Gaia Art Gallery, Lizzard’s, Sivertson, Waters of Superior and Zeitgeist Arts.

A new collection of original Nancy Stone paintings in oil will be on display through Aug. 31 at Pizza Luce.

“Blu Dot” will be the featured collection at UMD’s Tweed Museum of Art through Sept. 5.

Original oil paintings and jewelry pieces from Nancy Stone will be on display through Sept. 6 at Moxie Hollow, 202 E. Superior St.

The Duluth Art Institute’s Emerging Photographers Exhibition 2010 will be on display through Sept. 6 at the Depot’s Corridor Gallery.

Selections from the Potlatch collection of Royal Canadian Mounted Police illustrations will be on display through Sept. 12 at UMD’s Tweed Museum of Art.

The new Northern Printmakers Alliance Group exhibit, “Northern Summer,” will be on display through Oct. 16 at Northern Prints Gallery, 318 N. 14th Ave. E. Call 724-5212.

“You and Yours,” a curatorial project on the theme of family by Patricia Briggs, will be on display through Oct. 17 at UMD’s Tweed Museum of Art.

The Veterans’ Memorial Hall exhibit “Behind the Wire,” about local Korean War POW Anthony Jurek, is now open at the Depot.

The free Veterans’ Memorial Hall exhibit “Generations of Service,” which spans roughly 150 years of military service and includes locally donated artifacts, is now open at the Depot. See www.vets-hall.org.
