Sunday, Jan. 31

Performances scheduled for “The Last Dance of Dr. Disco,” an interactive murder mystery starring Jody Kujawa at Midi Change of Pace Dinner Theater in the Fitger’s complex: at 7 p.m. Feb. 5-6, 12-13 and at 1 p.m. Jan. 31 and Feb. 7, 14. Cost is $41 for Friday and Saturday shows and $31 for Sunday shows; call 727-4880 for reservations.

The Duluth Figure Skating Club will host the 29th Northland Figure Skating Competition Jan. 28-31 at the DECC. The event is free and open to the public, but donations will be collected to help the relief effort in Haiti. More than 500 skaters will compete. Full details TBA.

The Bayfront Park outdoor ice rink is open for skating, and the Bayfront Family Center will be staffed daily from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, from 1 to 8 p.m. Saturdays and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays.

Monday, Feb. 1

Peace Cabaret 2, a Mississippi Civil Rights Project fundraiser, will be held at 7 p.m. at The Venue at Mohaupt Block, 2024 W. Superior St. There will be music, performances and a documentary photography exhibition. Call 525-3037 for complete details.

Artists from the Petrozavodsk Conservatory in Russia will perform at 7:30 p.m. at UMD’s Weber Music Hall. Cost is $19 for adults, $17 for seniors and $5 for students.

The Monday Adult Skaters have an open skate in the DECC arena from 11 a.m. to noon. Price is $3 per session and parking passes for the season (which runs through March) are available for $5. Sessions open to all adult skaters. Call 724-2285 for more. Bring your own skates.

Tuesday, Feb. 2

The Parker Quartet will perform at 7:30 p.m. at Mitchell Auditorium on the St. Scholastica campus. Cost is $17 for adults ($15 for Minnesota Public Radio members) and $5 for students.

The Autism Association of Northern Minnesota will meet at 6:30 p.m. at Kenwood Edison Charter School, 1750 Kenwood Ave.

The Score Bar hosts salsa dancing every Tuesday night. Free dance lessons kick off the night from 7 to 8, followed by open dancing until

midnight.

The Maxi Childs Trio performs at 7 p.m. every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at Black Water Lounge, 231 E. Superior St.

La Leche League, a mother-to-mother support group for nursing mothers, will meet at 6:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church (The Coppertop). This month’s topic is “The Family and the Breastfed Baby.” Babies and children welcome. Lending library available. Call 341-8369.

Wednesday, Feb. 3

The Tisdales will play at 10 p.m. at Pizza Luce. Dead Man Winter, featuring Dave Simonett from Trampled by Turtles, is also on the bill. Cost is $8.

Cities Never Sleep will perform at 9 p.m. at UMD Rafters. The King and the Thief is also on the bill. Cost is $5 (free to UMD students).

Udac’s third annual Walk a Mile in Our Shoes treadmill walkathon will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Raise pledges and walk for 30 minutes at 500 E. 10th St. to help out people with disabilities. Full details online at www.udac.org.

Progressive Action will host a meet-and-greet with progressive candidates, past and present, at 5:30 p.m. at Chester Creek Café. The event will also include a presentation by Take Action Minnesota regarding strategies for electing a progressive governor. Call 349-6681 or visit www.prog-action.org.

A health fair for seniors will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Lakeshore, 4002 London Road.

The Red Star nightclub at Fitger’s hosts salsa lessons from 7 to 9 p.m. every Wednesday. Tickets are $5, but they are good for $5 off any drink.

Betty Braunstein and Steve Highland, a flute-and-violin duo, will partake in the Cloquet Public Library’s Sound of Science program at 12:30 p.m.

Thursday, Feb. 4

A grand reopening party for Renegade Theater Company, formerly Renegade Comedy Theatre, will be held at 6 p.m. at Teatro Zuccone, 222 E. Superior St. Food will be provided by Zeitgeist Arts Café, and there will be a silent auction. At 8 p.m. RTC’s latest production, “The Sparrow,” will be staged. The play, directed by Katy Helbacka and starring Jenna Kase, will also be staged at 8 p.m. Feb. 5-6, 11-13 and 18-20. Cost is $15 for adults and $12 for students and seniors.

The 16th annual Ely Winter Festival will be held Feb. 4-14. Visit the city’s Web site for the event, www.elywinterfestival.com, for details.

Nikolai Gogol’s “A Government Inspector” will be staged at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 4-6, 11-13 at the Play Ground (in the Tech Village). Cost is $10.

Learn about the Duluth Energy Efficiency Program (DEEP) and clean-energy projects undertaken by St. Louis County at 1 p.m. at Duluth Public Library. Scheduled speakers for this free event include Jodi Slick of Common Ground, Angie Miller (Community Action Duluth), Dean Talbott (Minnesota Power), Eric Schlacks (Comfort Systems) and Tony Mancuso (St. Louis County).

Friday, Feb. 5

As part of the free Warner Reading Series, Pulitzer Prize-nominated poet Andrew Hudgins will appear at 7:30 p.m. at Somers Lounge on the College of St. Scholastica campus.

Lake Superior Singles Fellowship, a non-denominational singles group supported by the United Presbyterian Church, will meet at 6:30 p.m. at the London Road Blackwoods for dinner.

Saturday, Feb. 6

William Bastian, tenor, and Tyler Kaiser and Ed Martin, lutes and guitars, will perform at 7:30 p.m. at Mitchell Auditorium on the St. Scholastica campus. Cost is $12 for adults and $6 for students (18 and younger). Call 723-7000.

The Duluth Republican Women’s Club is hosting a social and lunch meeting at 11:30 a.m. at the Radisson. The guest speaker will be Tony Sutton, state GOP chairman. Make reservations by Monday by calling 624-7090.

Comedy Pro Tour, featuring Kevin McPeek and Tim Harmston, will be held at 6:30 and 9 p.m. at Dubh Linn Irish Pub. Cost is $10. Reservations recommended; call 727-1559.

Exhibits

Lisa Casperson’s art will be on display at Bixby’s Bagels (in the Mount Royal Shopping Center) through Jan. 31.

Adam Swanson’s exhibit “Penguin at the Bar” will be on display through Jan. 31 at the Red Mug coffeehouse in Superior (at the intersection of Hammond and Winter).

The national exhibition “Lewis and Clark and the Indian Country” will be on display at the UMD Library through Feb. 25. Call 726-8130.

“The Atomic Edge: Design in Print Imagery, 1940s-1960s” will be on display through March 14 at UMD’s Tweed Museum of Art. Free.

The St. Louis County Historical Society exhibit “Preserving the Old Country: The Experiences of Croatians, Serbians and Slovenians in St. Louis County” opens Feb. 1 at the Depot and runs through March 16.

Paintings by David Ericson and Gilbert Munger will be on display through March 31 at the Depot in the Fesler Hallway.

“Form & Surface: Selections from the Glenn C. Nelson Collection” will be on display through Nov. 7 at UMD’s Tweed Museum of Art.

The free Veterans’ Memorial Hall exhibit “Generations of Service,” which spans roughly 150 years of military service and includes locally donated artifacts, is now open at the Depot. See www.vets-hall.org.
