Coast Guard helps man who needed insulin pump

A Coast Guard crew from Bayfield evacuated a man who needed a new insulin pump on Friday afternoon in the Apostle Islands.

A Coast Guard crew from Bayfield evacuated a man who needed a new insulin pump on Friday afternoon in the Apostle Islands.

The 60-year-old kayaker was picked up from Rocky Island, about 20 miles offshore from the U.S. Coast Guard Station at Bayfield. A 30-foot response boat crew transported the man safely to shore.

“He was running out of insulin, but he was stable and OK,” said Boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class Chris LaValley in a Coast Guard news release.

Fellow kayakers contacted the Coast Guard via Channel 16 on a VHF-FM radio, which the Coast Guard said is the most reliable way to request help offshore.
