Northland's food bank distributes record assistance in 2008

In a difficult economic climate, the Northland's regional food bank handed out a record 2.98 million pounds of food in 2008. Local food shelves and soup kitchens supplied by the food bank saw a dramatic increase in demand.

Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank, the region’s, the lone food bank for Northeastern Minnesota and Northwestern Wisconsin, distributed a record 2.98 million pounds of food in 2008, the group said today.

Area food shelves and soup kitchens saw a 32 percent increase in demand the past year, said Shaye Moris, Second Harvest Northern Lakes' executive director.

The food bank is working to complete a $1.6 million facility expansion to help with the increased demand. The group has raised $766,000, 46 percent of the funds needed.
