Reader’s view: Attractive streetlights don’t always meet needsThe second paragraph of a Jan. 31 article on the Bluestone Commons streetlights clearly presented the source of the problem. “The streetlights … are aesthetically pleasing, vintage-inspired globe street lamps,” it read. Lamp designers of the past did not consider the concepts of light pollution and preserving a dark sky, so neither do the designers of vintage-inspired lamps. A lamp that is aesthetically pleasing when sitting on a pole in daylight may not necessarily be the best solution for providing light needed at night. A globe street lamp sends light everywhere, wasting all that is not directed downward.
