Local view: Assault rifles don’t belong in society

In the early 1950s I was working at a YMCA summer camp and helping out at the rifle range teaching young kids how to safely shoot a .22-caliber rifle. The NRA at that time was known for its excellent gun-safety programs, and it provided .22 shells at a discount to any organization that taught gun safety.
