Michael & Mary Utecht are the former "leaders" of the Harbor City RollerDames (established in January 2007, they stepped into leadership in 2008 and decided to leave this past October). As present General Manager of HCRD and on behalf of our league, we wish them the best of luck in this new league pursuit. They are both exceptional skaters. They also had their own article regarding their involvement with HCRD. I hope, going forward, they remember a league is about more than two individuals.
The naming of this new league being formed in Cloquet is misleading. Cloquet is not necessarily Duluth/Superior. This also misleads people to believe it is a new sport to the area. As mentioned above, flat-track roller derby was introduced to the Twin Ports nearly 3 years ago. Harbor City RollerDames skate out of the World of Wheels Skate Center in Superior, and have business support throughout Duluth and Superior. We are 40+ people strong at present, and welcome new interest.
With the Utechts' hope of creating a league in Cloquet, this does certainly help expand the range of derby in the Northland. There are up & coming leagues in Thunder Bay and Bemidji, as well as an established league in Fargo/Moorhead. If this article has sparked curiosity about flat-track roller derby, please check out Harbor City RollerDames Dec.19th (10pm) bout against La Crosse, WI's Mississippi Valley Mayhem at World of Wheels. Tickets are $7 and available at W.O.W., Carmody Irish Pub, and from your favorite HC RollerDame. Part of the proceeds are going to Safe Haven Women's Shelter.
